Toby the Tram Engine is the No. 7 engine on the Island of Sodor. He is brown and grey, square, and old-fashioned, both in looks and in character. He has a cowcatcher and side plates covering his main wheels. Toby is careful in everything he does and very rarely has any accidents, although he can be lacking in self confidence at times. He is always happy to work and is frequently found taking stone wagons to and from the quarry with his faithful coach, Henrietta.
Toby is based on the J70 tram engine, a steam-driven 0-6-0 locomotive from the Great Eastern Railway (Class 53).
